Heaphy Track

Sir, — I am. a Canadian nearing the end of my third visit here. I love this country and your native bush amazes me. Last week I tramped the Heaphy Track. At the end of my journey at Kohaihai River I struck up a conversation with one of the investors/operators of the soon-to-commence commercial tourist walks on the Heaphy. He appeared to have little knowledge of or love for the bush. Why should people with no apparent interest In tramping other than to make money, receive a licence? On the Heaphy I met three women, all over 60, carrying packs and enjoying it. That is what tramping is all about. The commercialisation of the Heaphy is crass and disgusting. — Yours, etc., - -
