Summer Times programme

Sir, — Your correspondent, Mr A. Thompson, while bemoaning the demise of the arts employment schemes and Summer Times programme, appears to be embracing the pervasive handout mentality that corrupts art. History has shown that art from the state lacks quality because of the employer-employee relationship. Rather than being vital and challenging it becomes a cynical shadow of what, art should be. Art can and must survive by the virtue of its own quality. When it becomes dependent on handouts, it dies. Mr Thompson praises Mr McPherson of the arts employment scheme for his fine work. I ask could he have done otherwise? — Yours, etc., TREVOR NASH. February 26, 1986.

Sir,—My family adds thanks to the organisers of the Summer Times festival their dedica-

••• . ' tibn ;in providing a wonderful ;and . varied programme. For families, especially low-income ones, to be able to remain in the city over the summer, and to have such a range of activities and entertainment available, has been greatly appreciated. The planning and. organisation must have been enormous, and it will be very sad if the experience and good will generated are lost to the city.—Yours, etc., B. CRESSWELL. February 24, 1986.
