The Gorbachev stamp
Sir, — Your sub-leader this morning (February 27) repeats the claim that President Reagan is a "great communicator.’’ But what an artificial communication it is — and I am not alone in this view. The conservative weekly “Australian” of January 26,1984, published a short assessment of Mr Reagan’s style, noting that he used many well-tried and profitable Hollywood manipulative techniques: heart-warming anecdotes and jokes against himself; a look of principled determination allied to righteous indignation concerning communism and the hint of a tear in the eye and a catch in the throat when touching on human situations. Fortunately many people, Including numerous Americans, are not conditioned to fully accept such patently rehearsed and staged "communication.” The Philippines fiasco will take all these and many other Reagan skills to explain away. — Yours, etc.,
M. T. MOORE. February 27, 1986.
