Teachers’ action

Sir,—lf anyone is looking for some light and encouragement in the prevailing depressing circumstances of the teachers’

strikes, let them consider the private Christian schools, whose teachers do not belong to the P.P.T.A. and who have continued normal teaching. The Christian staff of these schools have shown integrity, and concern for both the children in their care and the parents. In State schools generally, teachers do not appear to feel so strongly motivated to work together with parents. Instead they seem, to regard themselves as more responsible to the Government as their employer, and, through loyalty to P.P.T.A. policies, seem to be reflecting Some of the immoral and greedy trends in society. This, is in; marked contrast to teachers whose highest allegiance is to Christ, and show this through their unselfish service. One sympathises with Christian teachers in State secondary schools, who must have divided loyalties at this time.—Yours, etc.,

JOHN CANHAM. February 24, 1986.
