Little River prices ‘realistic’

Romney two-tooth ewe prices only just reached $3O per head at the Little River ewe fair yesterday.

Bids were scarce for many of the medium-quality crossbred two-tooths and several pens failed to reach their vendors' reserves.

The demand was much stronger for the top draftings of Romneys from well-known breeders, although prices did not reach the heights of previous seasons. Top two-tooths were up to $l3 per head cheaper than last year, and the top price was $30.75 for a pen from J. E. Howden, of Port Levy. The next best price was $29.50 for Romneys from J. R. Stanbury, of Little River. The Little River fair regularly attracts widespread support from buyers because of the good quality of the sheep and two years ago only 10 pens failed to reach $3O. The downturn in the farming industry stifled buying power yesterday as it has with all other ewe fairs this season in North Canterbury. Prices, however, were regarded as realistic at $7 to $lO below last year. The yarding contained 5930 two-tooths, compared with 7357 last year.
