A youth charged with the abduction of a girl, aged four, in the city last Thursday, had his bail opposed by Detective-Ser-geant Neil Scott in the District Court yesterday. Michael Mace, aged 17, unemployed, is charged with unlawfully taking the child away with intent to deprive the mother of her.

He was remanded in custody by Judge Fogarty to Thursday. Mace is charged with committing the offence on February 20. Last Friday Mace was granted bail of $2OOO on charges of unlawfully taking a $16,000 car, driving it while under the influence, and driving while disqualified. At that time the police prosecutor, in opposing bail said it was likely that a charge of kidnapping would be laid against Mace. PRISON TERM Eight months in prison was the sentence given to a male model earlier convicted of breaking and entering the Lichfield Street premises of Rayner Vile Jewellers, Ltd, on February 6.

Mr A. N. D. Garrett, counsel for Wayne Mareshah Meehan, aged 18, had admitted pulling off a wire grille, throwing a brick through the window, and stealing rings and jewellery, valued at $4992.

A police patrol found the defendant nearby with the stolen property in a plastic bag.

Mr Garrett said his client had been considerably intoxicated at the time which could have been why, after committing a “smash and grab” burglary he was still hanging around the area with the jewellery in his possession 10 minutes later. REMAND On charges of stealing seven containers of herbicide, valued at $4254, and attempted burglary, Gary William McQuillan was remanded in custody to March 3. McQuillan, aged 31, unemployed, is charged with stealing the herbicide, the property of Dalgety Crown on January 16. He is charged with the attempted burglary of Wrightson NMA at Parnassus on February 23.
