Powerful quad planned by GM

NZPA-AP Warren, Michigan General Motors Corporation plan to begin production in six ' months of a 112 kW (150 h.p.), four-cylinder engine that was much more powerful than engines of similar size, company officials said.

The 2.3-lltre quad had 2.4 times the power per litre of a typical engine, said Don Mlles, assistant chief engineer for Buick-Oldsmobile-Cadillac, GM’s large-car group. The division’s five-litre, eight-cylinder engine produces 104 kW (140 h.p.).

“What we see, of course, is the V 8 engine going away,” Miles said. “Certainly, these four- , cylinder engines are going to erode the market for six-cylinder engines;” The quad used four valves per cylinder, which should boost fuel economy about Bkm per U.S. gallon (3.8 litres) over a typical engine using two valves per cylinder, Mr Miles said.
