Starling class win certain for Howell
Two days of sailing at Charteris Bay during the week-end yielded four wins and assured Mark Howell of a victory in the Starling class at the South Island age group championships. Howell, the current P class champion, relished the conditions to dominate the fourrace series instead of the highly favoured Hamish Hey, who was expected to win.
In the Optimist class, Michael Coombe, of Timaru, caused a minor Upset in the 12 to 13 year age group, to finish first in over-all standings from Glen Baker, sailing Kimbo.
Coombe also finished first over all in the Optimist championship. In the 14 to 15 year age group, Mathew Nolan, skippering Echo, found the light winds to his liking to win all four races and finish the over-all champion in the P class. Results:—
