N.C.C. and the Right wing

Sir, —So the National Council of Churches leadership is concerned about Right-wing groups dominating education and local body committees, and the Right wingers quite openly agree that is their aim. Why shouldn’t they, they have nothing to hide. Surely in a democracy all political groups are entitled to seek a majority, to any degree they wish, and to their electors’ wishes. Would the N.C.C. have it otherwise? They have hidden their real motives, but clearly their leadership is putting out clumsy anti-Right propaganda, in the name of democracy. It is ironic that the N.C.C. itself is undemocratic. Their leadership has no mandate whatsoever from the people in the pews to destroy the credibility of a Christian church organisation by carrying on confrontational political action, whatever the colour. — Yours, etc., R. A. LEWIS. February 23, 1986.
