Microwave station on hills
Sir,—Thank you, Jennifer Barrer, for wringing out some information about the Post Office plans for a large microwave transmitter on Cashmere. It will, if the plan is not changed, mar the views of the hills from many parts of the city, loom over Elizabeth and Victoria Parks and dominate existing residences and those to be built in a large new subdivision. It may well pose a health hazard, though engineers are unlikely to admit that until it occurs. For those reasons the Post Office should accept the recommendations of its own consultants and locate the tower on distant Marleys Hill, despite the extra cost. People come first. In any case, why are current plans regarded almost as a State secret? Do the authorities fear a strong public reaction once their ghastly secret is out? I urge Cashmere residents as a first step to sign the petition now circulating seeking relocation of the tower. — Yours, etc., E. T. BEARDSLEY. February 23, 1986.
