Cyclists shatter Games qualifying time

PA Wanganui The national cycling selector, Gordon Sharrock, called the New Zealand team pursuit combination a gold medal chance for the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games after it shattered the New Zealand record and games qualifying time late on Wednesday ”ight. Gary Anderson (Wanganui), Stephen Swart (Hamilton), Andrew Whitford (Tokoroa) and Russell Clune (Auckland) went four seconds under the qualifying time in a special ride at Cooks Gardens.

The team’s qualifying mark was 4 minutes 32 seconds and the combination returned a time of 4.28.74.

Mr Sharrock equated the time to a 3 minute 50

second mile in athletics. The New Zealand squad is a young one — three 21-year-olds and an 18-year-old — which Mr Sharrock - said could go through to the Seoul Olympics in 1988. “It’s a situation we have looked for for years. The foundation is there.” New Zealand finished second to Australia in the < 'ent at Edmonton in 197* and at Brisbane in 1982. The Australians won the Olympic title in 1984 but Mr Sharrock said Australia was in the process of building a new team. “That puts them back a bit.”

Swart and Whitford have already qualified for the 4000 metres individual pursuit after fast times at the next Oceania Games in Wanganui.
