‘Battle of Ashes’

It has been called the "battle of the Ashes,” it involves Australia and New Zealand in bowling competition, and the deliveries will be of the underarm variety. The occasion will be the meeting of the Burwood (Christchurch) and the Burwood (Sydney) Bowling Clubs in serious, social competition at the first-named club’s greens on Sunday. Four years ago a team of local Burwood bowlers visited their namesake and that visit was reciprocated two years ago. The Sydney bowlers enjoyed the trip so much they have returned this year

with a tour party of 40. Yesterday the Burwood bowlers from Sydney made a fleeting visit to Dunedin and this morning they will play bowls at the Burwood headquarters before having dinner and being entertained at the club. The club’s secretary, Mr Fred Hodgson, said yesterday that the “battle of the Ashes” would take place on Sunday after a champagne breakfast. The rival presidents, captains, and down to the rank and file would oppose each other in games which would do credit to any rivalry between the two countries.
