Australians win ‘lighthearted match '

PA Hamilton Australia finished what its captain, Allan Border, called a “reasonably lighthearted match” at Hamilton’s Seddon Park yesterday by beating Northern Districts with four wickets and more than a session in hand. The Australians, with their batting order switched about to give a sight of the ball to those who had not had a chance in the first innings, completed their .task of scoring 183 shortly before 4 p.m. Northern Districts’ failure to reach a decent total in its second bat made Australia’s victory

cruise more comfortable. After most of the first day had been lost to bad weather, Geoff Howarth and Border both declared on Monday while their batsmen were scoring well and experiencing little difficulty.

The expectation that such mastery of bat over ball would continue was not fulfilled when the leftarm spinner, Ray Bright, burst through Northern Ditricts’ middle order on Monday evening. Bright was named man of the match by a former test batsman, John Parker, after the match.

“Ray had a very good workout,” said Border of

the Australian vice-cap-tain.

Bright’s quicker colleagues, Bruce Reid and Simon Davis, wrapped up the Northern Districts innings after 52 further minutes batting yesterday morning. ‘

The wicket-keeper, Bryan Young, reached 31 before Davis had him 1.b.w., and later in the day broke Northern’s record for keeping dismissals in a season when a wide offside stumping of Border off Karl Treiber gave him his 24th first-class victim of the summer.

The Australians had almost six hours play avail-

able to score 182 to win. After the openers, Wayne Philips and Tim Zoehrer, and then Steven Waugh, failed to lay claims to the crease, it was left to Border to take command and the greatest steps toward victory. The left-hander combined a sound defence with a consistent, flawless despatch of loose deliveries to the boundary. NORTHERN DISTRICTS First innings 167/2 dec. Second inningsß. Mawhinney b Reid 0 L.
