Nelson squelches to cup victory
Nelson had no problem in retaining the U-Bix Cup after North Canterbury forlornly called an end to a badly rain-affected cricket match at Trafalgar Park yesterday. When play ended one hour short of the scheduled drawing of stumps, Nelson had scored 186 for two wickets. With seven full sessions of play lost after the first two days were rained out, play eventually began at 2.30 p.m. on the third and final day. North Canterbury’s only hope was to win the toss and put Nelson in to bat on the rain-affected pitch. While that immediate goal
was successful, some determined batting brought the game to its inevitable conclusion.
North Canterbury’s opening seam attack of Steve McNally and Gary Saunders caused early problems for the Nelson opening batsmen. But with John Smith and Jeff Rackley combining in a 48-run first wicket partnership, North Canterbury was not able to achieve the early breakthrough it vitally needed. The partnership which finally slammed the door was an unbeaten 129-run third wicket stand between David Guthardt and Paul Yates.
