New High Court Justice
PA Auckland Mr Robert Smellie, Q.C., has been sworn in as a High Court judge in Auckland. * Friends and colleagues watched the ceremony presided over by the Chief Justice, Sir Ronald Davison. Mr Justice Smellie is a specialist in building contracts. He recently appeared for the Attor-ney-General in the eightweek long Maui gasfields litigation. He has written a text book on building contracts and was chairman of the Equal Opportunities Tribunal. Mr Justice Smellie began his legal career in 1955 with the Auckland firm, Grierson, Jackson, and Partners as a clerk to the former Governor-Gen-eral, Sir David Beattie. He left the firm to enter practice as a solicitor, and was appointed a Q.C. in 1979.
