Peruvian art on offer
Christchurch art lovers will have the chance to see Peruvian gold artefacts and Italian paintings. The Christchurch City Council approved last evening the Robert McDougall Art Gallery’s displaying the two exhibitions later this year. However, the gallery has been instructed to negotiate the costs of the exhibitions so that it does not pay more than its
share. The Peruvian exhibition features treasures of the Incas dating from A.D. 100 and the Italian show, drawings, paintings and etchings by the eighteenth century Venetian artist, Canaletto.
The budget for the Peruvian show is $130,425 to the McDougall Art Gallery for 35 days and for the Canaletto show is about $50,000 for 44 days. Both the Auckland City
Art Gallery and the National Gallery in Wellington will display the Peruvian show for longer than the McDougall Art Gallery but the budget provides for the three galleries and the Dunedin City Art Gallery to share equally the core costs. Councillors want Mr John Coley, the McDougall Art Gallery’s director, to negotiate on the Christchurch share of the core costs.
