Hospital cleaners strike
Twenty-five night-shift cleaners employed by Crothall Hospital Services at Christchurch Hospital are on strike over the demotion of a supervisor. They began the strike at 6.20 p.m. last Friday and voted last evening to continue it indefinitely. They work from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. each weekday, although some work until 8 p.m. but get an hour’s less pay.
The secretary of the Canterbury Hospital
Workers’ Union, Mr Martin Moodie, said that the 25 women were angry because the supervisor had been demoted to a position as a polisher, which gave her less pay. He said that the woman resigned rather than accept the demotion, and a friend had also resigned, in sympathy. The day shift is still working. Mr Moodie said that the union would ask the day shift and other
Crothall staff for support for the striking workers.
