At stumps the touring side, put in to bat by Sri Lanka, had scored three for 240 in 90 overs. The captain, Mark Nicholas, was not out on 23 and Nick Cook, who came in as nightwatchman, had yet to score. Coming together at one for 42, Slack and Randall took the score to 206 in 220 minutes with some responsible batting. It appeared the pair would continue till the close but a smart piece of fielding by Roshan Mahanama ran Slack out for 85. The Middlesex opener spent 299 minutes at£the
crease. Randall, who has had a disappointing tour, became cautious after Slack’s dismissal. He was only eight short, of a century when he edged the paceman, Rumesh Ratnayake, to the wicket-keeper, Gamini Wickremasinghe.
