N.Z. softball team to play in Canada

PA Wellington The New Zealand women’s softball team has been invited to play in a special tournament at Vancouver in July. The New Zealand Softball Association approved the trip at Wellington during the week-end. It is expected that teams from all the main softball-playing countries will participate at Vancouver, bringing together again the teams which competed for the world title at Auckland last month. The N.Z.S.A. publicity officer, Mr Kevin Baldwin, said that the trip would have to be partly subsidised as it was a big expense and not budgeted for.

“About , $lB,OOO will have to be found, but we are confident we can raise the funds,” he said. The association’s meet-

ing also approved extra international fixtures, including an entry for a men’s under-19 team to world champlonshios at Oklahoma in 1987. A team from the under-19 age group will also play two matches against a Utah state team which will tour New Zealand next month.

A tournament promoted by the Cowans Cardinals club as a benefit for the late Jimmy Cotter may see specially-invited players flown in from the United States to play in a New Zealand side. The games will be staged in the Hutt Valley on March 22 and 24.
