Shcharansky freed
NZPA-ReuterWest Berlin The Soviet dissident, Anatoly Shcharansky, was released into the West at Berlin’s Glienicke bridge border crossing yesterday after nine years captivity. Shcharansky, a Jewish human rights activist, was released ahead of the other eight people
involved in the prisoner exchange, the most highly publicised EastWest swap to take place.
The Soviet bloc released three convicted Western agents in exchange for five suspected or convicted Communist agents held in West Germany and the United States.
