World chess rematch

NZPA-Reuter Lucerne, Switzerland The reigning world chess champion, Gary Kasparov, will defend his title against his defeated rival and Soviet compatriot, Anatoly Karpov, starting in late July or August, said the president of the International Chess Federation, Florencio Campomanes, yesterday. Mr Campomanes said the two would meet for a

rematch starting sometime between July 28 and August 4 this year. It had been initially decided the match would be played in two parts, starting in London and continuing in Leningrad, he said, but talks were currently under way with the two countries’ chess federations to discuss the possibility of staging the entire 24-match event in London.
