Bullet find delays plane
NZPA-AP Honolulu The departure of an Air New Zealand jumbo jet bound for Vancouver, Canada, from Honolulu, was delayed for two hours yesterday after a .45calibre bullet was found on board the aircraft, authorities said. A search of the Boeing 747 and its 236 passengers failed to find a weapon, said Mr Lawrence Barone, the inspection and control chief at Honolulu Inter-
national Airport. The pilot of Flight 10, which originated in New Zealand, returned to the gate area after a hostess found the bullet near an exit door in the passenger section of the plane, said a Hawaiian Department of Transportation spokwoman, Ms Marilyn Kali. Authorities had the passengers and 22 crew members disembark after the discovery was made while the airliner was tax-
iing to a runway, Mrs Kali said.
Authorities had no immediate indication how the bullet got on board. In Auckland, an Air New Zealand spokesman, Mr Vern Mitchell, said the source of the bullet was baffling.
Mr Mitchell said normal security measures had been observed, and there was no reason to doubt procedures at Honolulu.
