First of new jets due soon

The first of Air New Zealand’s new 737 aircraft will arrive in Christchurch early next week. It is one of six Air New Zealand bought to replace the six oldest aircraft in its domestic fleet, some of which are now 16 or 17 years old. The Minister of Civil Aviation, Mr Prebble, said the other five would be delivered in February and March. The first new aircraft will have extra equipment installed at Christchurch and will have its first scheduled flight on January 31. Mr Prebble said the new jets had more powerful engines.

“The advantage of more powerful engines will show up particularly in Wellington where the older 737 s have often had to take off without a full cargo load and sometimes without any cargo other than passengers’ luggage,” he said.
