Chile ‘organised’ pelting
NZPA-Reuter Santiago Right-wing supporters of Chile’s military Government prevented Senator Edward Kennedy of the United States from leaving Santiago airport for two hours yesterday and later pelted his car with eggs, witnesses said.
The police made no effort to intervene as 200 demonstrators blocked the main access road to the airport and attacked cars carrying opposition leaders to meet Senator Kennedy. They used
sticks, stones, eggs and tomatoes.
Senator Kennedy, who said that he had come to support a peaceful transition to democracy, eventually left the airport in a police helicopter. Senator Kennedy’s aides said the United States Embassy had confirmed that the demonstrations were organised by the Chilean Government and added that the United States Ambassador, Mr Harry. Barnes, had complained to the Foreign
Ministry. As Senator Kennedy ended his first appointment — a visit to a home for handicapped children — Rightists pelted his car with eggs. President Augusto Pinochet has ordered Government officials not to meet Senator Kennedy because of his support for a ban on United States arms sales to Chile and his campaign for economic sanctions over human rights abuses during 12 years of military rule.
