End to rubber strike near

Some progress was made yesterday at talks aimed at ending the eight-week-old rubber workers’ strike, said the industrial mediator who chaired them, Mr Maurice Teen. However, no settlement had been reached and talks would resume today, he said. The parties in the dispute had had intensive discussions and were working hard to solve it, said Mr Teen. “It would be premature to be more specific at this stage,” he said. The president of the Federation of Labour, Mr Jim Knox, representatives of the Canterbury Rubber Workers’ Union and employers’ representatives took part in the discussions. Rubber workers went on strike on November 21 after the breakdown of their award talks over a pay relativity issue. A lockout of workers imposed on December 10 was lifted yesterday.
