Easy cricket win for India

NZPA-AAP Melbourne The one-day cricket world champion, India, had little trouble brushing aside Australia in the Benson and Hedges World Series Cup match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground last evening, winning by eight wickets. Before a record AustraliaIndia one day crowd of 52,612, Australia managed a total of 161 off 44.2 overs of the rainshortened match. However, India scored 162

with a loss of only two wickets in 40.2 overs. The Australian top order batsmen failed. It was an uninspiring effort. Only Steve Waugh, aged 20, who was named man of the match after his 73 not out, showed any fight. At one stage, Australia was battling at 50/5. The Indian opener, Sunil Gavaskar, blunted any Australian pace with a determined 59 off 100 balls. The loss leaves Australia still leading the W.S.C. table on five points with India on four points and New Zealand on one. AUSTRALIA D. Boon run out 23 G. Marsh b Kapil Dev . . 5 G.
