Avondale increases stakes

PA Auckland The Avondale Jockey Club yesterday announced hefty stake increases for feature races at its autumn and winter meetings. At the March 1 meeting the class one Avondale Classic will rise $lO,OOO to a minimum of $40,000, the Flying Mile by $2500 to $lO,OOO and the Auckland Classic, for three-year-olds, by $3OOO to $BOOO. On April 26 the money for the DB Draught Championship Stakes will be up by at least $12,500 for a minimum stake of $50,000 and the Promotion Handicap, a class one 2200-metre event, will carry a stake of not less than $40,000, compared with $30,000 last year. The Avondale Steeplechase will be worth not less than $20,000, as against $18,750. For the Leopard Classic on April 25 the stake will not be less than $lB,OOO and for the New Zealand Sires’ Championship not less than $20,000.
