China erects tourist tents

NZPA-AP Peking

Tourists visiting Hebei province, north-east of Peking, can now stay in airconditioned “yurts” with modern plumbing, the official “Xinhua” news agency said. Thirty-one yurts, or Mon-golian-style felt tents, modelled after those used by emperors and officials when they were conducting diplomatic activities during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), have been set up at a summer resort at Chengde, “Xinhua” said.

The yurts have modem toilets and are air-condi-tioned. The smallest will serve as double bedrooms and the medium-sized as conference rooms or bars.
