Soldiers hurt

Two injured Territorial soldiers were taken to Christchurch early yesterday when the truck they were travelling In clipped the Rangitata Bridge and rolled down a bank.

The two are Corporals Donald Theodoras Vialle and Martin William Rowlands, both aged 28, married, of Dunedin. Last evening Corporal Vlalle was reported to be in a fairly comfortable condition but under observation in Princess Margaret Hospital. Corporal Rowlands was in a satisfactory condition in Christchurch Hospital after surgery.

The accident happened at 6.25 a.m. yesterday on State highway 1 a t th e south end of the Rangitata Bridge. The men had been at an annual military camp at Tekapo, and were travelling north to the Lake Sumner access road on a convoy exercise.

Corporal Vialle was driving the Mercedes Benz Unimog truck as part of a convoy of four. Corporal Rowlands was a passenger. The men were trapped in the truck for up to half an hour while soldiers tried to free them.

The truck was damaged extensively.

The public relations officer for the Third Task Force, Squadron Leader Don Haggitt, said the accident would be the subject of a court of inquiry. He would not speculate on the cause of the accident.
