Youngsters to rescue

Rescuing a yacht and quick thinking by two young life guards yesterday meant a change from the usual rescues performed by Canterbury life guards so far this summer.

In the morning, Sumner life guards received a telephone call about a yacht in distress with a broken mast in the Estuary. Two guards swam the boat and its two occupants back to shore.

In the afternoon, two young life-saving club members, aged less than 12, noticed two teenagers, aged 16 and 18, being pulled out to sea on a strong rip at South Brighton. The young guards, in the water with boards at the time, assisted one of the teenagers to shore, and supported the other until the duty life guard arrived.
