Pellet hits girl in neck
A teen-age girl was shot in the neck with an air rifle pellet as she was rowing on the Cam River, near Kaiapoi, early last evening. She was not seriously hurt.
A boy, aged 14, later admitted firing the shot from the riverbank.
The girl was hit about Ikm downstream from the Main North Road between 7.30 p.m. and 8 p.m. She reported the shooting to the police, who used the AshleyWaimakiriri rescue jet boat to return to the area. An air rifle was found on the riverbank, and two boys were seen running away. Tracker dogs were used in the search, and the pair, aged 14 and 11, were found soon afterwards.
The police youth aid section is expected to decide today whether to prosecute the boy who fired the shot.
