Otago has Auck. all out for 205
PA Dunedin t John Cushen produced a sustained spell of accurate bowling to help Otago dismiss Auckland for a modest 205 on the first day of the Shell Trophy cricket match at Carisbrook.
Cushen, answering every call made by his captain, Warren Lees, took four for 51 from 29 overs, and bore the brunt of Otago’s stint in the field. Auckland struck back early when Otago batted, and had the prize wicket of Ken Rutherford in Gary Troup’s third over, when the opener tried to glance a ball down the leg side and was adjudged caught behind. Troup produced a hostile and lively spell of pace bowling and Otago finished the first day at 37 for one. Auckland made its 205 in 340 minutes from 84.5 overs after Peter Webb had won the toss and, in a surprising move, elected to bat.
There was considerable pace and life in the pitch for the bowlers but Webb, the Auckland captain, clearly backed his in-form batsmen to battle through the pre-lunch session and establish a big total. His move, however, only partially succeeded, and the first day ended with honours even. ■
Play dawdled in the prelunch session in which Auckland struggled to 61 for two with Trevor Franklin lbw in the last over before the adjournment after batting 146 minutes and facing 121 balls. He succeeded in taking the shine off the ball and frustrating the Otago bowlers, but it was not one of his more convincing innings. After lunch, however, the tempo increased and 112 runs were scored for the loss of five wickets in the afternoon session.
Derek Scott scored his second consecutive Shell Trophy half-century, and made an aggressive 52 in 134 minutes from 96 balls before he was trapped lbw by the perservering Cushen. Scott gave chances when on nine and 38, but he hooked and drove with power, and his approach gave the Auckland innings some momentum.
Scott had helped Franklin add 52 for the second wicket in 102 minutes and, although
there were a series of useful partnerships with most batsmen making a start, none went on to a big score. S 5 With Brian McKechnie suffering from toothache, Cushen bowled unchanged for 17s overs during ; the. afternoon session and took three for 37. At one . stage, he bowled six consecu- ' five maiden overs while taking ; I two wickets. Webb held the middle and > late-order together with a fluent 49 in 128 minutes from , 96 balls (six fours) but he was . last man out trying to run a'/' ball down to third man and retain strike. , Cushen gained his strongest - support from Neil Mallender t who also took four wickets and J produced some excellent de- ; liveries. ■ Cushen has now taken 12 > wickets for 113 runs in his first three Shell Trophy innings of ' the season.
