Guilty plea to fraud charges

PA Invercargill Barry Stephen Shirreffs, aged 37, a , builder, of Queenstown, was convicted in the District Court at Invercargill yesterday on eight charges of intent to defraud, for his part In what has been described in court as a national . conspiracy involving forged cheques to a value of $640,000. Shirreffs, who pleaded guilty, was remanded to January 17 for a probation report and sentence. Bail of $15,000 was continued. He appeared before Judge Reid on eight charges of using a document to obtain pecuniary advantage, namely, National Bank cheques personalised Trustees Executors and Agency Company of New Zealand, Ltd.

He is jointly charged with an Invercargill contractor, Trevor Alan Lee, aged 36, and Kay Linda Kennedy, aged 32, a solo mother, of Christchurch,

Lee was allowed a continuation of bail of $30,000 when he appeared in the District Court at Christchurch earlier this week, with a reporting clause to the police in either Dunedin or Invercargill.

He is to appear again at a later date.

Kennedy was remanded last month on bail of $5OOO with a similar surety to appear in the District Court at Christchurch on January 20.
