Firm waits for take-off
Greymouth reporter
Coast Air Charter, Ltd, the company which has launched a daily return air service between Greymouth and Christchurch, is still not off the ground commercially. On Thursday, wet weather was given as the reason for failure to make the four flights planned but yesterday it was confirmed that the company does not yet have the air service certificate to allow it to fly commercially. The certificate authorises a company to fly a particular air service. In addition, the Category B air transport licence which relates to the work of a particular aircraft is in abeyance pending the decision on the certificate.
The problem was apparently compounded by the resignation of the chief
pilot, Captain Fred Holtkamp, late on Wednesday — the day before the new service was due to start.
A new chief pilot has already been hired, Captain Phil Cooper. Although he will start on Monday, he has to familiarise himself with the route and update his authorisation to fly Coast Air’s twin Otter de Havilland before the necessary air service certificate can be obtained.
Coast Air has a staff of five pilots.
“We have the pilots, the crew, the plane and everything is ready to go, but we have to await the licence to operate commercially,” said a spokesman for Coast Air yesterday. He declined to elaborate in the absence of the general manager, Mr John .Royds, who was out of s Greymouth yesterday.
