Charles retains P.G.A. lead

PA Tauranga The day was marred by sometimes steady rain, but Bob Charles ended yesterday’s second round of the New Zealand P.G.A. golf championship with his two-stroke lead preserved.

Backing his 7-under 67 on Saturday, Charles played percentage golf at Mt Maunganui yesterday and didn’t drop a stroke.

He had two birdies in a 35-35 9-hole split and a total of 137 starting the third round — two strokes ahead of Frank Nobilo who had 67 today. Charles consistently made greens in regulation and often was putting for birdies. Starting from the tenth tee, he made 12 successive pars and seldom looked in danger of doing worse.

It was surprising to see him misjudge the swing of the green to fail a birdie putt of just over Im on the 6th. Only briefly was Charles’s lead threatened. That was by last year’s runner-up, Nobilo, whose first round of par 72 had him somewhat off the pace. Nobilo went out in 35 then birdied five of the next seven holes to match Charles at 6under par. Then Charles made his second birdie of the day and a few minutes later Nobilo

hit through the green at the short 17th to make bogey and undo bis previous fine work. Scores (New Zealand unless noted): 137 — Bob Charles 67, 70. 139 - F. Nobilo 72, 67. 140 - B.
