Steven, Tatana win national tennis titles
’■ Two Aucklanders, Brett Steven and Edith Tatana, won the New Zealand 18 years singles title at the BP tennis championships which finished at Wuding Park yesterday. Steven beat an Australian, Neil Berwick, in an interesting final The first set was a dour struggle with Steven taking the advantage in a tie-breaker. He won that, 11-9. Steven went on to win the second set and the match comfortably. Tatana also beat an Australian, Allison Scott, in two sets playing solid, no-nonsense tennis.
A number of finals were also decided in the Canterbury Coca-Cola under age championships yesterday. The Australian visitors had a little more luck in this event Katie Cox (Australia) beat Allison Smith in the final of the girls 16 years singles. The boys finals this morning will be between two Christchurch players, Matthew Granger and Andrew Batie. Selected results from the 18 years Singles.—Semi-finals: B. Steven (Auckland) beat I. Pound (North Shore), 6-4, 6-2; N. Berwick (Aust) beat M. Willman (North Shore), 6-4, 6-1. Final Steven beat Berwick, 76, 6-2. Doubles.— Semi-finals: Berwick and L. Diefenback (Aust) beat C. Hansford (Auckland) and G. Wilson (Marlborough), 6-2, 6-2; Steven and P. Grub! (Wellington) beat B. Melville and K. Veney (Aust), 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
