Reprieve for Swansea
NZPA-Reuter London An English third division soccer club, Swansea City, has had the immediate threat of extinction lifted when the deadline on the winding-up order imposed last week was put back to January 13. The London High Court decision means the troubled Welsh club, which topped
the first division four years ago, can play Cardiff today and all its matches in the next three weeks.
Swansea’s reprieve will be put before the football league’s management committee at the earliest opportunity.
The club faced expulsion from the league after failing to play its fixture against Walsall last Satur-
day, but a league spokesman said: “They are likely to be given leave to carry on until such time as their future has been clarified.”
Swansea, which has debts of about £1.5 million ($4.23 million), were ordered to cease trading and placed in the hands of an official receiver last week after being refused more time to pay debts.
