Enterprise sticking close

PA Auckland Digby Taylor’s N.Z.I. Enterprise was sticking close to Atlantic Privateer yesterday as the progress of the leading yachts slowed in the Whitbread round-the-world race. Enterprise, whose Christmas Day messages included the unsavoury one that it had lost its long-standing

second leg lead to Atlantic Privateer, trails the American yacht by just four miles, race headquarters reported yesterday.

Atlantic Privateer is now 1874 miles from Auckland but the restricted progress at the head of the fleet means it has slumped to fifth on handicap. Enterprise is seventh on handicap and the handicap

leader is once again Philips Innovator which is eighth on the water. Peter Blake’s Lion New Zealand has pushed north but to little avail. She is fifth in the race for line honours, tenth on handicap, and 2139 miles from Auckland. The first yacht is expected into Auckland on New Year’s Day.
