$NZ firmer

PA Wellington The New Zealand dollar closed slightly firmer at $U50.5015/35 on Tuesday after quiet trading on the foreign exchange market. It opened at SUSO.SOOO/20 and dealers said it moved up and down in small volumes of business between 49.7 c and 50.2 c. The Reserve Bank’s tradeweighted exchange rate index was at 63.2 at 3 p.m., from 63.4 at 9 a.m. and 63.0 on Monday. Late in the day, the kiwi dollar was worth 73.9 Australian cents, 1.26 marks, 35.2 p and 102 yen. In Sydney on Tuesay the Australian dollar ended marginally firmer at JU50.6805/15 assisted by commercial buying

and improved money growth data. The currency had opened at $U50.6802/9, little changed from Monday’s close of $U50.6803/10. In New York on Tuesday, the U.S. dollar closed mostly lower after a shortened session. Trading was extremely quiet and thin. Commercial year-end position-squaring was the main feature, and only a handful of interbanks traded, dealers said. Purchases of foreign currency futures contracts at the International Monetary Market in Chicago accounted for much of the dollar’s weakness, analysts said. The dollar ended at 2.5020/40 marks, down slightly from Monday's close of 2.5080/90.
