Middle range Renault

Renault will launch a new middle range car at the Geneva Salon next March. It will go on sale in France and the main European countries immediately afterwards. This car will be known as the Renault 21 and will slot in between the Renault 18, an upper-medium-range model, and the top-of-the-range Renault 25. It will be available in 11 versions, as a result of the combination of five engine levels, two gearboxes and four equipment levels. There are a pair of 1.7 litre petrol engines rated at 56 and 67 kW respectively, a 2 litre 89kW petrol engine and a pair of 2.1 litre diesel engines, one of 50kW and the other, a turbocharged version, of 65kW. The gearboxes are four and five speed. These are all front-wheel-

drive models, the 1.7 litre engines being mounted transversely, while the larger petrol and diesel engines are mounted longitudinally.

MacPherson type front suspension, with a lower wishbone and a negative offset layout is used, while at the rear trailing arms are used and they incorporate programmed geometry similar to that used in the Renault SGT Turbo model.

A low drag body features a large luggage boot with equally large opening and a low loading height. A split rear seat makes additional load space available.

A stretched line, plunging bonnet, sloping grille, high boot, large glazed surface area, small quarter lights and narrow roof pillars are the styling features.
