Tax benefit warning

PA Wanganui The Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Tapsell, has warned Maori incorporations over tax benefits. He said in Raetihi that the time was fast approaching for the Government to receive tax. benefits going to Maori incorporations. When Maori incorporations were granted a tax benefit of 20c in the dollar, compared with other business ventures which paid 45c in the dollar, it was on the understanding that Maoris were not to make capital gains, Mr Tapsell said.

“My own view is that those incorporations prepared to operate for the community should receive the privileges. Where they are intent on simply making a profit I do not see why they should continue making money and receiving the benefit,” he said. Mr Tapsell was in Raetihi to present a conservation award to Winstone Afforestation, Ltd, for its work on land near the town.
