Spiderman gets ready to scale the big top of the travelling Royale American Three Rings Circus, which arrived in Christchurch yesterday. The deft-footed individual is “never scared” during his dare devil act which includes slithering down the king pin, balancing on wires in mid-air and swinging low over the audience on ropes tied to bis ankles. But there have been “moments” — like the times when every rope, bar one, snapped as he spun into space above the heads of the audience. “I need the show atmosphere to do it,” he said. That means rehearsals are out. Fortunately they are unnecessary. Spiderman — whose identity must remain

concealed — has been clambering over buildings and big tops for the last eight years. He started off in Italy, climbing over big city buildings and leaping from one to another as the main stuntman in the television series of the same name.

Spiderman is one of the main acts in the travelling circus’s repertoire, which includes trapese acts, a void cat show and clowns.

The circus will perform at Queen Elizabeth II Park from December 26 to January 5.
