NEWS OF NEW ZEALAND’S cricket ‘ series triumph over Australia spread far and wide within minutes of John Bracewell dismissing Craig McDermott to clinch the 2-1 victory at the W.A.C.Aground in Perth earlier this month. The elation of the New Zealand supporters present was echoed less than half an hour later in the French city of Bordeaux. Startled Frenchmen looked on as unrestrained cheering broke out on a double-decker bus with English registration — they were not to know that a Radio New Zealand commentator had just announced the final cricket score to several dozen Kiwi rugby league players and supporters.
