SIDELINES
DEAN McKENZIE, a member of the Old Collegians B team in the Presidents grade, achieved one of cricket’s rarest feats in his side’s match against Bumside-West at Ham recently. With his leftarm medium pace bowling, he captured four wickets on consecutive balls — the first caught behind, and the next three all bowled. His fifth delivery missed the leg stump by a whisker. In firstclass cricket history that feat has been performed only 27 times, the most recent instance being 13 years ago by the former England spin bowler, Pat Pocock, for Surrey against Sussex at Eastbourne.
THE COACHING CLINICS conducted by the prominent soccer coach, Terry Conley, for junior age group players in the Canterbury region have received the stamp of approval from the New Zealand Football Association. Coaches in the country’s other 16 soccer areas have been instructed by the N.Z.F.A.’s director of coaching, Allan Jones, to organise similar clinics over the summer throughout the country. Mr Conley has resigned as the Canterbury Football Association’s regional coach, but remains the N.Z.F.A.’s area coach.
PAUL RUTLEDGE has moved to the head of the wicket-keeping dismissals chart in senior club cricket. He has 22 victims for St Albans, including a remarkably high number of stumpings, eight. Ross Bayliss, of High School Old Boys, has 21 dismissals, two of which are stumpings, while the Riccarton wicket-keeper, Brent Glanville, is third on the list with 17. Ash Hart, of Sydenham, took four catches on Saturday to boost his tally to 16.
A TOTAL OF $3500 in prize money will be at stake in the South Island surfcasting championships at Nape Nape, North Canterbury, on Saturday, January 11. This makes it the South Island’s second richest fishing competition after the great salmon chase on the Waitaki River. The Nape Nape championships are organised by the Cheviot Lions Club, with all proceeds destined for Hohepa Homes.
