New trophy, new format

A competition designed to find the country’s strongest club, in terms of playing ability, will start next year with the inaugural DB Draught Challenge Golf Trophy. The new event replaces the Kelliher Trophy national club challenge competition which ran for many years, but on a different format. The Kelliher Trophy competition allowed for only three challenges a year, with teams consisting of 10 players. The new competition involves only four golfers in each team. At the finish, the winning club will have proved itself the best at three levels; in its district, in its region and in the country.

Competition play will be over 36 holes without handicap, with the best three

scores in each round counting. District play-offs have/to be completed before the end of February — the Canterbury play-off will be at Shirley on February 16 — and the regional play-offs by the end of March. The final will be* in May, at a venue to be decided. The regions are:—No. 1: Northland, Auckland, Waikato. No. 2: Bay of Plenty, Poverty Bay, Hawke's Bay, No. 3: Taranaki, Manawatu-Wan-ganui, Wellington. No. 4: Nelson, Marlborough, Canterbury, Buller. No. 5: Otago, Southland, Aorangi. A plaque will be presented to the winning club, with the successful team receiving the trophy and each member of getting an egraved pewter tankard.
