Special correspondent New Plymouth Marie Skipper is entitled to favouritism in the D.B. Taranaki Trotting Cup Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Taranaki Trotting Club’s twilight meeting at New Plymouth today. The four-year-old mare has raced well this season and she has made her way through the grades in quick fashion. She has been performing above average in tough company in the Auckland area with three wins from her last six starts. In her last race she was sixth at Auckland. The fact that she was left parked out

and pushed wide with a lap to go certainly did not help her chances. Adover Star is in top form and has certainly lost no zest with age. The eight-year-old has won twice in his last four starts, including a win at Hutt Park earlier this month in his most recent outing. Master Vance is racing consistently with some especially good efforts, including a win two starts back. At his last start he made ground solidly for fourth over 2400 m and could appreciate the additional 200 m of today’s encounter. Grand Return has been turning in some classy efforts up north and he could easily get

the winning stake if he produces his best form. Dream Drive will have the services of the country’s leading driver, Tony Herlihy, and is reportedly in good shape. In the second leg, the West Coast Scaffold Handicap Trot, Joe is selected. The four-year-old gelding has always looked a smart customer and his form at the moment is first-class. Just Way has been knocking on the door in his recent racing and deserves a win. Laredo has also been unlucky not to win a race and will again be fighting hard at the finish. Colour My World is also rated highly.
