Really Honkin looms as big threat to Rangiora rivals

Really Honkin could take another step towards a start in the $150,000 Auckland Cup on

February 8 when he contests the Transport North Canterbury Handicap at the Rangiora Trotting Club’s summer meeting tomorrow.

Really Honkin, which has had seven wins from only 15 starts, is a five-year-old well above average in ability. Three further successes will assure him of a start in the Auckland feature. After Rangiora there will be the $lO,OOO Ashburton Cup five days later, followed by racing at Addington at New Year. The son of Honkin Andy is one of the backmarkers on 20m, a handicap not easy to overcome on a fairly tight track. However, Really Honkin has such great speed that he should be able to move into a reasonably handy position whenever his driver, John Hay, decides to progress. Saucy Star, a shade disappointing at trials last week,

has by-passed the Auckland meeting to campaign in Auckland over the holidays. She was a last-start winner of the Geraldine Cup on November 30, a performance likely to be a better guide to her prospects tomorrow. Her record this season has been outstanding and she will only have to produce a peak run to make Really Honkin work hard for victory.

Venus Boy, Late Lustre, Sure He Can and Andronicus are capable pacers engaged on the front, with Master Mood, Regal Nugent, Coastal Trader, Greg Patron and Select Wave smart performers further back. However, they will all need luck to contend

with the Southland challenger, Really Honkin.

Talisman could be the one to beat in the second leg, the Dominion Breweries Handicap, which will be run over 2000 m. He is not the most reliable beginner, but from No. 5 at the barrier, he should be able to settle quickly enough to take up a reasonably handy position. He finished gamely for third to El Victory and Elbon Blue in the Waimate Cup last Saturday and will only have to go as well this time to be hard to catch.

Montana Star, Shaun, Counsel Bay, Quarter Shares and Rotary Motor have all paced sound races at times and they could be the pick of the remainder.
