Catch sank vessel
A Lyttelton fishing vessel the Keri-Lee rolled over and sank when the weight of a catch landed on deck resulted in a big and sudden loss of stability,, said the Minister of Transport, Mr Prebble, yesterday. The incident happened 36km north-west of Lyttelton Heads on October 24. Mr Prebble said that no formal inquiry would be
held into the sinking, as the facts were clearly established. He accepted a recommendation from the Marine Division not to hold an inquiry. The sinking resulted from two changes in fishing procedures which lessened the stability of the vessel. One change was the added weight of a net roller aft of the wheelhouse where
the trawl net was stowed, said Mr Prebble. The other change was the requirement to land all fish with ice in each case. On this vessel the cases were kept on deck where they were accessible. The sole crew member, Mr Alan Brasell, of Lyttelton, launched a liferaft and was picked up within 15 minutes of the sinking.
