Footpaths

Sir, — I agree with M. McKay’s letter of December 16 doubting the wisdom of the Christchurch City Council’s grandiose and extravagant proposals for Victoria Square. Queen Victoria will most certainly turn in her grave, or even topple from her perch in the square over which she has presided for so long. In comparison, as Mr McKay says, most of the inner city eastern paths are an absolute disgrace, particularly Hereford Street, Gloucester Street and the Stanmore RoadHereford Street intersection, which has been dug up, refilled and then dug up again numerous times, and then left in a dangerously-uneven condition .not safe for the very young or the very elderly to negotiate. It is high time the council revised its priorities and realised that ‘ the - residents of the inner eastern suburbs do not get the

necessary and satisfactory repair work to their footpaths when compared with the immaculate state of the walking areas in the more affluent northern and hillside suburbs. — Yours, etc., (Mrs) J. TAYLOR. December 18, 1985.
