Waimakariri Gorge road
Sir, — I was interested in Craig Whisker’s letter (December 10) on the Waimakariri Gorge road. For many years I have grizzled, to the point of boredom, to many people, including councillors of the Malvern County, with obviously no effect. As your correspondent says, the approach to the gorge bridge is unnecessarily winding and dangerous and it is especially annoying when following heavy articulated vehicles down to a crawling pace or in a queue of vehicles slowed down by these completely unnecessary bends. All this hassle could be avoided by restoring the road to the original straight approach, which still exists, to what was originally a railway bridge. I am sure if this was a privately-engineered construction a host of inspectors and other bureaucrats would be on hand to enforce the removal of this extremely annoying, dangerous, and unnecessary stretch of road. — Yours, etc., J. J. ALLISON. 2 R.D. Rangiora, ' December 18, 1985.
